10 Cancelled Horror Movies That Would Have Been LEGENDARY
7. Mina Harker
Though Dracula is one of the most defining characters in horror, it's difficult to put a fresh spin on the classic tale, since it's been told and retold endlessly.
However, Karyn Kusama had a straightforward but compelling pitch. Announced in 2020, Kusama's project would serve as a modern reimagining, focusing on Dracula's primary victim in the source material, Mina Harker. Placing Mina in the lead instead of Jonathan Harker or Abraham Van Helsing was a simple approach that helped view Bram Stoker's novel in a different light.
Also, Kusama was already well-acquainted with subversive horror and exploring power dynamics, as can be seen in The Invitation and Jennifer's Body. For this reason, Mina Harker could've been something really special.
Annoyingly, the whole thing was scrapped in 2022, mere weeks before filming, and after Jasmine Cephas Jones had been cast in the lead.
Although there are a couple of theories why the cancellation occurred, the only official reason is "creative differences". Whatever the cause, losing a filmmaker with Kusama’s specificity and ambition on such a gripping story is extremely disappointing.
