Paul W.S. Anderson's Resident Evil grossed over $1 billion, making it among the most successful video game adaptations, horror series, and zombie franchises of all time.

With that said, Anderson's undead saga wasn't well-received and has little in common with the games it spawned from.

What's more infuriating is how zombie aficionado George A. Romero nearly oversaw a Resident Evil movie years before Anderson's offerings, with Sony asking Romero to write and direct a live-action adaptation after he directed a TV commercial for the Resident Evil 2 video game.

Romero took things seriously, recording his secretary playing Resident Evil in its entirety, studying every aspect of the gameplay (and of course, the Oscar-winning acting), and his screenplay followed the original's "stuck in a spooky mansion" narrative accurately and included many key characters, such as Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Albert Wesker, and Rebecca Chambers. Furthermore, Swamp Thing co-creator Bernie Wrightson was hired to devise concept art for the undead creatures, including the final boss, Tyrant.

Despite Romero writing up to six drafts, Sony rejected all of them, believing the violence was too excessive. (Well, yeah, what did you expect?)

While Romero's Resi movie didn't come to pass, this year saw the release of the George A. Romero's Resident Evil documentary, giving a great insight into what we almost had.
