10 Cancelled Star Wars Projects That Were Devastating
2. George Lucas' Sequel Trilogy
It is obvious that the Star Wars sequels are incredibly contentious, though things could have been very different had George Lucas had some involvement in the films. Once Disney acquired the franchise, Lucas offered his ideas for a sequel trilogy. With the House of Mouse choosing to go its own way, many fans wish they used Lucas' story, which was outlined in 2020.
In The Star Wars Archives 1999-2005, Lucas said: "The movies are about how Leia is trying to rebuild the Republic… Luke is trying to restart the Jedi.” The Star Wars visionary also revealed that: “Darth Maul trained a girl, Darth Talon, who was in the comic books, as his apprentice. She was the new Darth Vader and most of the action was with her. So these were the two main villains of the trilogy. Maul eventually becomes the godfather of crime in the universe because, as the Empire falls, he takes over.”
Despite Lucas' trilogy being scrapped, a lot of the ideas those films contained managed to find their way into other projects. Star Wars: The Clone Wars would see Maul cheat death, and become the head of a crime syndicate, and Luke would go on to rebuild the Jedi Order, even if his efforts proved to be unsuccessful.
Whilst it's nice to see not all of Lucas' ideas were wasted, it would arguably have been better to see Disney adapt them for their trilogy, rather than making their own films, with no overarching narrative to create a cohesive story.
