10 Cannes Film Festival Protests (That Had Nothing To Do With Shoes)
5. When Cannes Caused A Royal Protest
Given Nicole Kidmans talent and grace in front of the camera, it is easy to presume that all the attention showered on her as a result of her starring role in Olivier Dahans Grace of Monaco would have been positive. But no. The film, which opened the Cannes festival last year and focuses, as the title suggests, on Grace Kelly, immediately came under fire by the entire royal family in Monaco for historical inaccuracies. Prince Alberts complaints led to a second row, this time between Dahan and the American distributor Harvey Weinstein. Dahan claimed that the latter had re-edited the film, changing its substance and ending without his permission. Weinstein defended himself by claiming that the royal familys problems with the film were legitimate. As always happens in these cases, common sense and a desire to see box-office profits pouring in led to a reconciliation between Dahan and Weinstein and the film was released to audiences in America with the blessing of everyone involved. Except that of the royal family.
