4. Khan - Star Trek Into Darkness

Coming into 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness, much was made of Benedict Cumberbatch's mysterious role in J.J. Abrams' follow-up to his rebooting of the franchise in 2009.

Was he playing the iconic role of Khan? Or would he be appearing as something else entirely?

Well, despite Abrams' multiple attempts to throw fans off of the scent of Cumberbatch's character identity, it soon came to pass that they were right in their assumptions all along.

Cumberbatch played the role of Khan with justifiable menace and completely dwarfed every other character he squared off with, either physically or verbally.

It was the sort of performance that transcends the sci-fi genre and felt almost Shakespearian in its delivery, with Khan showcasing exactly what lengths he would go to in order to save his crew and exact revenge on Starfleet for taking them hostage.

Sadly, the rest of the movie wasn't quite as spectacular as Cumberbatch's turn. While often visually stunning, one of the only universal takeaways from the film was that of the 'wholly unnecessary' underwear scene involving Alice Eve.

The film was titled Into Darkness and that's where it resides today, with only Cumberbatch's Khan acting as a glimmer of light.
