10 Casting Decisions The Dark Tower Film Must Get Right

3. Susannah Dean

Susannah Dean is one hell of an acting challenge, consisting as she does of two distinct and split personalities - Odetta Holmes and Detta Walker. It would be difficult for any actor to capture the dual aspects of those sides, as well as Susannah's other roles throughout the novels. At times she is Roland's trusted friend, at others she is his enemy, and eventually she is also a faithful partner to Eddie Dean. She comes to Mid-World from New York in 1964, and is initially hostile to Roland as Detta is in control. Thanks to Roland, the two personalities eventually merge to form Susannah and she ultimately becomes one of the gunslinger's most important allies. Ideal Casting: Lupita Nyong'o The 12 Years A Slave and Star Wars: The Force Awakens actress already has an Academy Award to her name, and her burgeoning reputation could be enhanced if she was to take on this complex, difficult role. She certainly has the potential to make this role her own. Back Up Casting: Naomie Harris The new Moneypenny in the Bond series has the toughness and charisma to own the role if given the chance. It might be difficult to get her on board, with her commitments Bond ongoing, but it would be worth a try.
