3. Thong Removal & CGI Genitals - The Northman
The finale to Robert Eggers' mesmerising Viking epic The Northman sees Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) battle his treacherous uncle Fjölnir (Claes Bang) in the nude at the foot of an active volcano.
And while you get no points for figuring out that Eggers didn't actually shoot the fight at a real volcano, a good portion of VFX resources were devoted to dealing with the actors' nudity - or lack thereof.
In the final film, it's made clear that Amleth and Fjölnir are fighting naked, albeit with low lighting and strategically placed smoke concealing their nether-regions most of the time.
But the more subtle effect involved removing the thongs that Alexander Skarsgård and Claes Bang wore while performing the fight, as can be glimpsed in behind-the-scenes images.
This underwear is of course nowhere to be seen in the final movie, enough that you might've just assumed the actors had agreed to stage the fight naked, given their clear commitment to the film elsewhere.
But alas, Eggers had the thongs digitally painted out and even added occasional slivers of CGI genitals back into the scene to give the impression that, indeed, they were fighting in the buff. Of this, Eggers said:
"We actually had to add some CG genitals for certain shots so that they didn't look too Ken doll-ish. You've got to make it look real, so I'm sure we did some full-body scans of Alex. They're out there."
