10 CGI Moments In The MCU We All Missed

2. Elderly Peggy Carter – Captain America: Winter Soldier

When an elderly Steve Rogers appeared in Avengers: Endgame, some viewers worried the scene would be let down by ropey makeup or special effects that screamed "uncanny valley". Thankfully, the combination of prosthetics and CGI used to make Steve Rogers look like a nonagenarian was flawless.

However, many viewers didn't realise this special effect was used half a decade earlier in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In the scene where Cap visits an elderly Peggy Carter, the 31-year-old actress, Hayley Atwell, was supposed to wear prosthetics so she looked decades older.

But when the directors noticed the prosthetics were limiting Atwell's facial movements, they worried it would impair her performance. Knowing CGI was the only way to do the scene justice, the directors hired Lola VFX - the same guys who created Skinny Steve Rogers in Captain America: The First Avenger. After tracing markers were placed on Atwell's face, Lola VFX digitally transposed the facial features of an elderly actress onto her to make Peggy look like she was in her 90s.

Sadly, Lola VFX recieved little credit since their visual was too seamless to notice.
