Utilising complex motion capture techniques, this meant that the essence of Nighy€™s performance was not lost in the transition to CGI; rather, the expressiveness of his face was retained, meaning that the troublesome €œuncanny valley€ was mostly broached. But that€™s not even the most impressively photorealistic element; it€™s those beardy tentacles hanging off of his face. Though it might seem a little more obvious now, at the time, there was not even a thought in my mind that they were CGI; I assumed them to be animatronic, given how seamlessly they blend into the very fabric of the scene, from the realistic lighting to authentic movement patterns. Stunning.
