6. Davy Jones - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zo-OYwh6KHA Industrial Light and Magic really are the Gods of the visual effects world, as they proved with the stunning work they performed on the otherwise pretty forgettable Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, namely bringing Bill Nighys half-man, half-squid aberration Davy Jones to living, breathing life. Utilising complex motion capture techniques, this meant that the essence of Nighys performance was not lost in the transition to CGI; rather, the expressiveness of his face was retained, meaning that the troublesome uncanny valley was mostly broached. But thats not even the most impressively photorealistic element; its those beardy tentacles hanging off of his face. Though it might seem a little more obvious now, at the time, there was not even a thought in my mind that they were CGI; I assumed them to be animatronic, given how seamlessly they blend into the very fabric of the scene, from the realistic lighting to authentic movement patterns. Stunning.
