10 CGI Scenes So Good You Think They're Real

6. Davy Jones - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zo-OYwh6KHA Industrial Light and Magic really are the Gods of the visual effects world, as they proved with the stunning work they performed on the otherwise pretty forgettable Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, namely bringing Bill Nighy€™s half-man, half-squid aberration Davy Jones to living, breathing life. Utilising complex motion capture techniques, this meant that the essence of Nighy€™s performance was not lost in the transition to CGI; rather, the expressiveness of his face was retained, meaning that the troublesome €œuncanny valley€ was mostly broached. But that€™s not even the most impressively photorealistic element; it€™s those beardy tentacles hanging off of his face. Though it might seem a little more obvious now, at the time, there was not even a thought in my mind that they were CGI; I assumed them to be animatronic, given how seamlessly they blend into the very fabric of the scene, from the realistic lighting to authentic movement patterns. Stunning.
