10 Characters The DCEU Wishes It Could've Introduced Differently

2. Batman

Unveiling Ben Affleck as Batman was, in the minds of Warner Bros and DC, their ace in the hole against the MCU. Here was an industry megastar, dwarfing the profiles of Hemsworth, Evans and Downey Jr, who was going to helm on of cinema's iconic characters and swing the critical tide back in favour of them. After all, the superhero movie explosion owed almost everything to the success of The Dark Knight, how could this fail to connect.

Well, for starters, they attempted to present a very complex version of both him and Bruce Wayne without actually giving the backstory enough room to breathe. To do a departure from Christian Bale was a smart move, but in order to set them apart you need to show the audience why... a few sorrowful glances at Robin's costume simply not being enough.

This version of Batman might well have been excellent, but he was only given half the film to shine alongside Superman. A team-up/conflict film was pretty much a license to print money for DC, but without giving Affleck his own batfilm to first establish the character he connected with absolutely nobody. Granted The Dark Knight Rises was only a few years before, but if that's too much of a hurdle for your new Batman to overcome then you have to ask why you want to do more films with him in the first place.
