Break-Out Role: Empire Of The Sun Despite his bad boy reputation and the infamous Terminator Salvation incident, Christian Bale is, simply put, one of the best actors alive - whether you love him or you hate him it's hard to deny the man's prowess. He caught the public's eye when he was 13 in Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun and proved at such a young age that he was oozing with talent. Whilst most children will approach a character with a simplistic method, Bale demonstrated maturity and subtle nuances rarely seen in younger stars. After steadily building a portfolio, we saw Bale rule the 2000s with his strict approach to method acting: films like The Machinist and American Psycho set him up as an actor who took his craft seriously. Then he landed the role of all roles when he was cast as Batman (I said there were two child stars with a key role in the franchise, didn't I?), which he then followed up with an Oscar win for his powerhouse performance in The Fighter. Few child stars can claim the pedigree that Bale has - now if only he'd remember his wife's name when he wins his Oscars (it's forgivable in the heat of the moment, but it still happened).
