10 Christian Perspectives On 2015's Movies

1. Avengers: Age Of Ultron - "Blasphemous!"

Surprisingly for humanity’s sworn enemy, Ultron appears to have a working knowledge of scripture, repeatedly making references to confessing sins or building his church. He calls Captain America “God’s righteous man”, which may or may not be a joke by the filmmakers – Cap is first seen admonishing Iron Man for his language, after all.

Also familiar with the Good Book is The Vision, whose “I am…I AM” line appears to have been taken from Exodus 3:14: “And God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM. And He said, ‘Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, I Am has sent me to you.”

This is the moment, more than other scene in the film, that turned Christian viewers against the picture. “As it stands,” wrote one viewer, “I cannot continue supporting Marvel and acknowledge myself as a true Christian.” Others were less polite, calling the film “inexcusable” and “anti-Catholic.”

“Blasphemy in God’s Old Testament theocracy is a capital crime,” claimed another viewer. “Anyone who blasphemes the name of the LORD is to be put to death. The entire assembly must stone them. Whether foreigner or native-born, when they blaspheme the Name they are to be put to death."
