2. Christmas with a Capital C (2010)
When I first saw the trailer for this film, I laughed, but then I was struck with a feeling of worry, as some people were going to take their children to see this. The poor souls. This isn't a horror; it's a family movie, designed with a special message and not meant to offend anybody. Of course, they failed that immediately by having Danny Baldwin star in it, but I could never imagine sitting through this film the whole way through. Out of sheer curiousity I pushed onwards. Set in Alaska, coincidentally the stomping ground of Sarah Palin, the film follows the town of Trapper Falls in their emphatic celebrations of the festive period. Sounds hunky-dory, until the town is encountered with the villain Baldwin, a militant atheist, who believes that the overdose of Christmas cheer and festivity is against his own rights, and seeks to run for mayor and have the celebrations turned down. The reason I dislike this film is not because of the constant references to the religious significance of Christmas, as quite frankly it is a religious festival, but it can be considered a little ridiculous to see an atheist immediately try and eliminate all of those elements from the holidays, as it would possibly influence children into associating atheism as the enemy of Santa Claus. Also, in a town that celebrates Christmas with such fervour for the past half century, it seems quite strange that a person trying to remove that Christmas element proves so popular in the mayoral elections. The film is not one to be recommended, and the reason it merits a place on this list is because it seems appealing to parents to watch on Christmas day, but please resist the temptation and let the "Christmas with a Capital C" campaign disappear without a trace. http://youtu.be/y_U6RGt8V88
