7. The Devil Rides Out
Again another brief appearance by the Devil here, but this appearance comes at the climax of some very blasphemous and wonderfully over acted Satanic rites. The reaction to this appearance pretty much encapsulates the feel and mood of this delicious piece of Hammer horror. Over the top and camp. I realise I'm making this film sound awful, but it isn't - it's amazing and - again - one of my favourite pieces of cinema ever. Adapted from a Dennis Wheatley novel and starring strangely enough Christopher Lee as the heroic Duc de Richlea. De Richlea wields ceremonial magic against Charles Gray's seductive and no doubt Crowley-esque Mocata. The Devil Rides Out seems to be a warning against flirting with the occult, but, ultimately sells the whole thing as actually quite thrilling, particularly if you're a bored and dull witted member of the upper middle classes. Second only to the gasps and excitation at the appearance of the Sabbatic Goat are the reactions to another demonic entity, which in essence is just a person of colour in a loincloth starring at our quivering heroes. Classic.
