10 Cinematic Universes That Failed To Happen
4. Power Rangers
Unlike many of the examples on this list, Power Rangers could have worked. Released back in 2017 by Lionsgate, Power Rangers was intended to be the start of a franchise that would span multiple movies. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer initially said that up to seven movies could be made. This bold statement would prove to have jumped the gun, ever so slightly.
Directed by Dean Israelite, the movie also serves as a reboot of the franchise that aims to be an update from the original series, while still keeping what fans love about its source material.
Despite the good intentions, the movie seemed destined to fail. The first poster was immediately criticized for its clear use of a stock photo, and the initial trailer drew complaints that it seemed too dark. This poor attention followed the movie into theatres where it was massive box office disappointment and gained just a middling response from critics. Hardly the big splash Lionsgate wanted.
Due to the poor box office performance, the planned sequels were never made, and Saban eventually sold the brand to Hasbro, who are currently working on another reboot. If released, it might break the Suicide Squad’s record of fastest franchise reboot after the release of the previous movie. With that being said, let's hope Hasbro can pull the reboot off and just pray that they don’t get Michael Bay to do it.
