10 Classic American Exploitation Movies

7. Let Me Die a Woman (1978)

let_me_die_a_woman_poster_01 Directed by the undisputed Queen of exploitation movies - Doris Wishman - Let Me Die A Woman is a semi-documentary film about transsexuals. She interviews a gender reassignment surgeon and several transsexuals. Interspersed with this are dramatisations of events that have happened in the interviewees' lives. The film is pure trash. Doris Wishman is synonymous with trash. There is no contribution from the film to understanding the plight of the transexual - indeed they become freaks for us to gawp at. The film is so astoundingly bad it becomes laughable. Wishman has no finesse for handling sensitive subject matter. It is crass, inept and exploitive. She randomly throws in ugly sexual scenes which are repugnant and sleazy. Nevertheless, because of its high camp factor and all round stupidity, Let Me Die a Woman is an American exploitation favourite.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
