8. The Flesh And Blood Show (1972)

Pre-slasher movie era film from Pete Walker, that piles up the body count. The story basically concerns a group of actors and a director who have been gathered together at an abandoned theatre to rehearse a play by a shadowy producer. A killer is knocking them off one by one and they must try and unearth his identity. One of Walker's more neglected classics, the film has a slasher template but does not indulge in the cinematic tricks that make slashers boring and derivative - such as a heavy breathing point of view shot. The film is not really heavy on gore and most of the murders are off screen but the film is full of nudity. There are also plenty of red herrings to throw you off balance. The film is very suspenseful and even the denouement is quite believable. Filmed in a marvellous creepy location and very downbeat (as is most of Walker's oeuvre), this was a successful transition from sex based films to horror by the great director.
