5. Principal Rooney Neglects His Whole School Chasing One Pupil He Hates - Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Just as we remember from our own schooldays, Principal Rooney has a job to do: we understand that, even if we don't like him. If one of his students is bunking off school, it's his job to follow it up, and discipline them accordingly; when Ferris Bueller takes the day off, he does so. Rooney rings up the Buellers and finds out why young Ferris isn't in. Ferris's mother tells the principal it's because of illness. So why does Rooney continue spend the film looking for Bueller, trying to prove that he's faking this sickness? Has he not got other students to teach, and is isn't this a reckless endeavour that would most likely get anyone fired from their job? Principal Rooney doesn't just neglect an entire school to head off on a wild goose chase looking for one student, he does so after receiving confirmation that he would be wrong to. It's an irresponsible and ill-advised decision from someone who should really know better; and anyway, why does he care so much if Bueller skives off? Doesn't he hate him? If Bueller fails school, he'll never have to see him again.
