10 Classic Special Effects That Put Modern Hollywood To Shame

3. The Fly (1986)

The Fly Jeff Goldblum

I€™ve always wondered how many moviegoers actually threw up as a result of being exposed to the gruesome, stomach-churning special effects that take place in this film. Without a doubt David Cronenberg€™s remake of the 1958 horror classic boasts some of the most spectacular-and disgusting-makeup effects ever. Jeff Goldblum€™s transformation from a mild-mannered scientist into a frightening human/fly hybrid is both fascinating and disturbing as Hell to watch thanks to Chris Walas€™ demented imagination and expertly applied makeup effects. Goldblum€™s poor character goes through some terrible changes (which include such things as his fingernails peeling off, his skin becoming crusty and just overall grotesque-looking, and some other nasty surprises) before reaching his final creature form, which looks awesome. It€™s little wonder that Walas won an Oscar for his work on the film as he truly deserved it.
