10 Cloverfield Lane: 9 Clues To What The Mystery Sequel Really Is

8. It Only Became 10 Cloverfield Lane During Production (At The Earliest)

Obviously the movie only became known as 10 Cloverfield Lane publicly in January, and while it doesn't seem to have been just a last minute marketing decision, The Cellar didn't become Cloverfield 2 immediately. According to J.J. Abrams, the idea behind the Cloverfield connection and the retitle came about "during production" and was "developed over time". Instead, the movie that Goodman and Winstead signed on for was then called Valencia and they probably didn't realise then they were going to be part of a surprise franchise. Of course, it's unlikely Valencia would have been the movie's final title - Bad Robot are renowned for openly leading with working titles (heck, Cloverfield was originally just a placeholder) - but when it was first used (back in September 2014), it's unlikely the film's fate had been fully decided.
