10 Cloverfield Lane: 9 Clues To What The Mystery Sequel Really Is

7. There Were Rewrites In The Middle Of Shooting (But Nothing Major)

Like reshoots (the occurrence of which is always used as evidence a big budget movie is in trouble), script rewrites aren't really as much a cause for concern as some people like to make out. They're for refinement and ironing out unexpected problems. But that's when you're dealing with a standard movie. This is one that developed into something else entirely during production; for that you'd expect some pretty major rewrites to have taken place. Whiplash's Damien Chazelle was the one called up to tinker with "Valencia", reportedly making changes during shoot itself, which chimes with 10 Cloverfield Lane only fully becoming 10 Cloverfield Lane mid-production. However, they may not have been as impactful as that suggests. Mary Elizabeth Winstead has stated that the rewrites were "nothing that was major", while at the same saying that over time the film became "something that I knew we weren€™t going to be able to talk about until people saw ". This is classic Bad Robot chatter, but what it most likely means is that through the rewrites the broader story beats remained in tact, but little bits were adjusted, which had a knock on effect of how the bigger picture was constructed.
