10 Cloverfield Lane: 9 Clues To What The Mystery Sequel Really Is

3. ...But Now Has Links To The Wider Universe

But if we are still very much following The Cellar (in plot at least), where does Cloverfield come in? And what were those rewrites for? Well, it's likely the shifts were made to the ending. The original suggestion of the The Cellar's screenplay (again, potential minor spoilers) appears to be that there had been some nuclear event and the world was ravaged by the fallout, meaning Goodman's character was actually right all along. This would have been something of a twist in a straight hostage movie (the crazy guy wasn't crazy), but as that's now been offered up front and centre in the trailers then you have to assume there is something additional to it - presumably how the movie links to the monster's original NYC rampage. But does that mean just the ending was altered or were there dialogue changes early on that allude to a franchise-shaking twist? It's impossible to tell with the scant details we have, but, whatever the case, it's looking like 10 Cloverfield Lane is at its heart still the The Cellar, with the Cloverfield elements worked in around the base plot (think one of the high-end Marvel movies). Now that's pretty much decided, let's see if there's anything we can glean about that finale.
