10 Cloverfield Lane: 9 Easter Eggs, In-Jokes And References
5. Pretty In Pink
For all the forced captivity (even if admittedly in the face of a big threat), the bunker isn't all bad - Howard has a pretty large collection of movies! In keeping with standard studio synergy, most of them appear to be Paramount Pictures releases; nothing like a bit of cheeky advertising. The movie that gets the most focus is Molly Ringwald's Pretty In Pink (Emmett mistakes it for Sixteen Candles), which Howard (John Goodman) watches regularly because, as he claims, it was his daughter Megan's favourite film. This is something that was alluded to in the viral marketing, with a still from the film proving an important step early on in the campaign. However, there's more to it than that - in Death Proof, Mary Elizabeth Winstead's Lee makes a point of how much she loves Pretty In Pink, oblivious to the other girls' mocking.
