10 Cloverfield Lane Trailer Breakdown: 15 Clues You Need To See

5. The Hatch

As the trailer begins to reach its climax, we first see the door and presumed exit to the bunker. Shot from below featuring a bright light, it's treated with great importance and, from the bunker side of the story, reaching it will likely be the movie's big objective. Also notice that Winstead is now limping and using crutches, putting this event later than most of what we've seen so far.
This exit looks to be separate from the rest of the bunker, with a thick metal door between it and everything else. It's entirely possible that Goodman has managed to keep the door secret, with Winstead and Gallagher Jr. unaware of how they could get free until now. The big thing in this shot though is the "Welcome" stone at the bottom of the frame, revealing that while the bunker does appear to be kitted out for survival, it was originally a regular residence, placing the movie in a populated area. New York City, perhaps?
It may not be intentional, but there's more than a whiff of Lost's hatch to this, with the big metal casing, square window and bright stream of light. Abrams was, of course, less involved with that show as it went on, but he still might have been keen for Trachtenberg to homage it (or even repeat the plot point) here.
