10 Co-Stars Who Hated Each Other On Set

1. Rachel McAdams & Ryan Gosling (The Notebook)

The Notebook could be called one of the biggest cult films of the last 20 years. It is seen as the film for women to watch if they want to be an emotional wreck at the end of the evening (and there will be plenty of burly men who will forever deny that they like it too, despite clearly being fond of it). The performances from Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling are excellent, and their on-screen romance is incredibly believable. It is staggering, therefore, that they detested each other for large chunks of the film's production. Director Nick Cassavetes spoke recently about an incident during filming, in which Gosling told him he couldn't stand to do a scene alongside McAdams.
"Maybe I'm not supposed to tell this story, but they were really not getting along one day on set Ryan came to me, and there's 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, 'Nick, come here.' And he's doing a scene with Rachel and he says, 'Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off-camera with me?' I said, 'What?' He says, 'I can't. I can't do it with her. I'm just not getting anything from this."
It's a hugely surprising revelation, considering McAdams' seemingly sweet nature and Gosling's cool exterior, but it actually worked in the movie's favour, with the tension between the young pair making their on-screen chemistry even more believable. They made up once the film had been completed, and dated between 2005 and 2007, and again briefly in 2008. Still, their hostile relationship remains the most high-profile just-off-screen fall-out in recent years. What other on set altercations have there been? Let us know in the comments.
