10 Comedy Actors Who Made Great Horror Movie Characters

8. John Goodman As Howard Stambler - 10 Cloverfield Lane

Unlike its predecessor, 10 Cloverfield Lane's presentation was more conventional (relatively speaking) compared to the 2008 film's found-footage style. This approach did not mean that the 2016 sequel was lacking in verve as its uneasy, atmospheric feel, impressive direction and committed performances made it one of the best films in the year of its release.

The film kicks off with Mary Elizabeth Winstead's Michelle as she attempts to leave New Orleans following a quarrel with her partner. To her dismay (and everyone else's), she crashes her vehicle as various reports of massive city-wide blackouts underscore the intense scene.

From there, she wakes up in a bunker and has to survive the sudden apocalyptic events alongside Goodman's Howard and Peter Gallagher Jr.'s Emmett. Winstead and Gallagher perfectly capture the characters' fear and confusion but they are understandably surpassed by Goodman's powerhouse portrayal.

The veteran actor shows his impressive range by capturing Howard's intimidating nature and his 'softer' side is both uncomfortable and pitiable. In addition to this, he sells the character's increasing desperation and violent nature as it becomes clear that Michelle and Emmett will not cooperate with him as he expected.
