10 Comedy Actors Who Sucked In Serious Movies

4. Jar Jar Binks - Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace

Just as Lawrence R. Harvey had no entries on his IMDB page prior to starring in The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence), so a certain Gungan actor was plucked from obscurity to star in a film similarly filled with excrement. Yes, Jar Jar Binks revolutionised the world of movies when he appeared in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, proving once and for all that CGI actors could be just as crap at acting as everyone else! Finding an equilibrium between earnest plot development and comic relief in epics of any sort has always been notoriously difficult, and George Lucas's creation is now the textbook example of how to lose that balance - witless, borderline racist mollusks-with-legs can somewhat monopolise an audience's attention, and not in a good way. In amidst earnest discussions of midichlorians and trade routes (remember, The Phantom Menace is possibly the first blockbuster movie fundamentally about tax!), Jar Jar seems so ridiculously out of place as to warrant his inclusion on this list. I can only compare my perception of his appearance in the film to watching Aliens, but re-imagined with the cigar-chewing Commander being played by Al Jolson.
