10 Comic Book Castings That Were Perfect (But In A Different Role)

4. Nicolas Cage As Mephisto Instead Of Ghost Rider

Nicolas Cage Mephisto Nicolas Cage is insane, genuinely insane and that shines through in his most off-beat roles. Something about his portrayal of Ghost Rider just didn't work as well as it should have though. Maybe it was the manic expressions or maybe it was those crazy eyes, but Cage is clearly not suited to superhero casting, despite rumors of him being up for the role of Superman back in the early 2000's. Cage's extreme style of acting could have worked brilliantly within the Ghost Rider films, but just not as the title character. The anti-hero was originally created in the comics when a demon named Mephisto struck a Faustian deal with Johnny Blaze, bonding him to a fire demon called Zarathos. Just imagine it for a moment: Cage as Mephisto, the pure personification of evil in the Marvel universe. The role would give Cage the freedom to be as extreme and ridiculous as he wants, hamming it up to his hearts content. Another missed opportunity.
