10 Comic Book Characters That Were Slaughtered By Hollywood

7. The Punisher

So far there have been three unrelated Punisher films, but none have done justice to the character. As a character, Frank Castle is remarkably adaptable for screen; this is the age of the Nolan style dark and gritty films, and while Marvel have tended to avoid this, The Punisher could represent a way into this elusive market. Anti-Heroes can be incredibly successful; Wolverine is a prime example of this, stealing the show in the X-Men franchise, yet Box Office success eludes this phenomenal character. He probably would not fit into the MCU with much ease, seeing as he has few qualms with killing his enemies, yet there is a clear compatibility between the comics and the screen that have thus far been disconnected. Arguably the 2004 Punisher film was too dark for its time, and the 1989 outing was simply embarrassing due to its low production investment. Rather than a big screen adaptation (since the last three have been dismal), the character could be made into a spectacular TV series; there is personal strife, dark twists and captivating themes that could run throughout. Regardless, the character has been done a disservice in films so far, and given how dark the comics are, it is hard to see why these films have failed to do the character justice.
