6. Bane (Batman and Robin)

And we follow up with Joel Schumacher's risible sequel Batman and Robin, which ended up ruining two of Batman's foes so badly (as well as the Caped Crusader himself) that the series died and had to be brought back to life by Christopher Nolan. After Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, Schumacher's take on the masked monster Bane is thankfully just a distant, slightly irritating memory, but at the time, it had comic book fans doubled over, squealing for the pain to stop. In the comics, as in Nolan's film, Bane is supposed to be extremely intelligent as well as super-strong; thus he is alongside The Joker an ultimate rival for Batman, and of course, he's known for his most famous act, which was breaking Batman's back. In Batman and Robin, however, Bane is depicted as a dim-witted meathead who has no aspirations of his own and simply follows the lead of Poison Ivy (played execrably by Uma Thurman). The result is one of the worst comic book misfires in film history, and it's no coincidence that the film was a catastrophic financial and critical failure.
