4. Fantastic Four

When he created them, Stan Lee never intended the Fantastic Four to be superheroes blessed with these amazing gifts. Instead, the Fantastic Four are a family who received powers that make them look like freaks of nature.

With this in mind, you could really lean into the theme of body horror as the four are trying to get used to their newfound abilities like being a hulking rock monster that society shuns. Using inspirations like David Cronenberg’s The Fly, you can show how grotesque and stress-inducing their powers really are, making it more of a reward seeing the team master them.

Everyone wasn’t really a fan of their last cinema outing in, but they did do something right. Having such emphasis put on their powers shows that they’re not superheroes at all (not to begin with), but rather scientists that have had a bad thing happen to them.

Their powers aren’t the only thing you can focus on. Seeing as they are explorers they could have a film that takes inspiration from Ridley Scott’s Alien, showcasing a claustrophobic trip to the Negative Zone where they have to go up against something like Annihilus.

Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes did a brilliant episode called “Assault on 42” which Marvel could easily make into a feature-length film spotlighting their first family.
