10 Comic Book Movie Deaths That Should Never Have Happened
4. Phil Coulson - The Avengers
You must be doing something right if you can star in a film featuring the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Loki, the Incredible Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow and still your death warrants a huge emotive response from the audience. Step forward, agent Phil Coulson, who was brutally killed off in the original Avengers film released back in 2012.
Prior to his death, Coulson had been quite a prominent figure with the S.H.I.E.L.D agent had previously making appearances in Iron Man, Thor and Iron Man 2, helping the Avengers come together and contributing massively to their official coming together. Therefore, when Loki sticks his big, blue staff right through him, it leaves the audience knocking over their treats and snacks to grab the tissues.
Except, Marvel ended up making a huge error. So big was the backlash to Coulson’s death that he was resurrected on the smaller screen, with Marvel chiefs manically using Nick Fury’s character to bring him back, wipe his memories and put him back in an equally dangerous and equally high-risk position of power.
Despite Coulson’s popularity, though, Marvel made a huge mistake by bringing him back – a mistake just as big as spearing his character in Avengers. The technology behind his return, treatments developed by Project T.A.H.I.T.I, also basically means anyone can live even if you see them die on screen. So if Thanos murders every Avenger going, it’s all good, because they’ve got the tools to bring them back. It all feels so very… Disney.
