There are certain stories throughout comic book history that have become so beloved by fans that adapting them is a double-edged sword. Get them right and you could create something truly incredible on screen, like Infinity War, but get them wrong and prepare to be crucified.

This was the case with X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006, when the conclusion of the original X-Men trilogy took on the Dark Phoenix story and in the opinion of most, completely butchered it. There were several key issues with this, including the fact that the story was fighting for time against another story revolving around the mutant cure, but also the handling of Jean Grey.

This was something that Simon Kinberg recognised as a mistake, and was able to undo eight years later with time travel. When the Last Stand writer ultimately wrote Days of Future Past, he used it as an opportunity to remove the Last Stand from the X-Men continuity altogether, going some way to redeeming how he treated Jean Grey back in 2006.

When Logan returned from the past, Famke Janssen’s character was alive and well, though it will be harder for fans to forget the timeline than the movie’s characters.
