There are few comic book characters that can match or even come close to the popularity of the Man of Steel, but Spider-Man is right up there with him. There isn’t a comic book fan alive that doesn’t love the webhead, but like Superman, he has had his fair share of misses on the big screen.

One of the consensus greatest comic book movies of all time is Spider-Man 2, but the pressure of not only living up to, but trying to one-up the movie is what arguably led to Spider-Man 3’s downfall. This is what Sam Raimi believes at least.

The first two movies spent time building a world and developing characters and relationships that fans truly connected to. For the third movie however, in trying to go bigger than ever before there were just too many characters thrown at the screen, something that the director can still acknowledge as a mistake.

If even the director of a movie isn’t particularly invested in what they are making, then it’s almost certain to fail. This mistake turned a lot of comic book movie fans against Sam Raimi for a long time, and it still stings that Tobey Maguire’s trilogy had to limp over the finish line like it did.
