10 Comic Book Movie Scenes That Totally Dominated Their Films
8. The Mark I - Iron Man (2008)
Marvel Studios got off to a great start to their plan for multiplex world domination with Iron Man, a refreshingly light and breezy entry in a genre that all too often falls into the doom and gloom of making things constantly darker and grittier. Somewhat surprisingly given the way it launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe and made Robert Downey Jr's Tony Stark an instant cultural icon, the action scenes are probably the weakest part of the movie. Ironically, the best of these set-pieces comes with the prototype version of the Iron Man armour. After establishing Stark as a fast-talking narcissist, he ends up imprisoned by in the Afghan desert by the nefarious Ten Rings. Somehow managing to build a weaponised metal suit when everyone else thinks he's creating a missile, the soon-to-be Iron Man breaks out and takes on his captors in a thrilling sequence that makes great use of both the confined recesses of the cave and the open desert. Relying heavily on practical effects and utilising great spatial awareness, the rest of the movie's action beats fail to match it in terms of sheer entertainment value.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
