10 Comic Book Movie Villains Who Were Universally Loved
8. Jeff Bridges' Iron Monger
The first Iron Man movie - which also happened to be the first movie of the current Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise - really took the superhero genre to the next level. It was critically acclaimed across the board and is still considered by many to be the best comic book movie ever made - certainly as far as Marvel's efforts are concerned. In the movie, Tony Stark first dons his powered armour and becomes the heroic titular character and a fitting armoured villain was put in place to rival him - Iron Monger. The Iron Monger armour was worn by Obadiah Stane Tony Stark's former mentor and a friend of his Father Howard's who turned on Tony in order to gain control of Stark Industries - and the character was very well received after a competent performance by veteran actor Jeff Bridges. The dual role he played - first as an ally and then as an enemy - was extremely convincing and, after Googling the Book of Obadiah, Bridges was surprised to learn that retribution was a major theme in that particular book of the Bible, something which Stane represents, and something that came across splendidly in Bridges' portrayal.
