10 Comic Book Movies Critics & Audiences Couldn't Agree On

Plenty of people found reason to love Black Adam... but not everyone.

Movies are of course, as subjective as any other form of art. What one person deems a masterpiece, another may think a waste of time, and vice versa. There is also the divide between critics who review movies professionally, and the general public who just want to be entertained. In this, there are often movies that satisfy one of these camps far more than others.

You can’t make everyone happy all of the time, and sometimes it shows. It really shows. A movie can be absolutely panned by critics before its release, only for audiences to completely disagree with everything they are saying.

This is arguably more likely to happen in the world of comic book movies than anywhere else. This genre very rarely gets recognition in terms of awards season, and critics are often left expecting more from a movie than a comic book adaptation was ever going to give them. Audiences however, just want to be entertained, and this kind of action movie is usually more than enough.

Though never foolproof, Rotten Tomatoes aggregates the scores of these reviews, from both audiences and critics, and it is one of the most viewed metrics along with box office numbers to ascertain how successful a movie is. This can be difficult when there is such a divide between both scores.

10. Black Adam

There are movies that have been stuck in developmental hell, and then there is Black Adam. The news was first broke of the Rock’s casting as the titular anti-hero way, way, way back in 2007, 15 years ago, within a year of Robert Downey Jr.'s casting as Tony Stark.

This became something of a passion project for Dwayne Johnson, who took his usual full-on approach to the creation, production, and marketing aspects of any of his projects, but dialled everything up another notch. Imagine waiting 15 years of your life for something so important to you, only for people to dislike it.

This was exactly what happened with Black Adam. After so much excitement and anticipation, the latest DCEU picture released to a meagre and officially rotten score of 55%, and has since fallen to an abysmal 40%. However, then the audience scores came in and the story couldn’t have been more different.

The Rock’s DCEU debut, at the time of writing, stands at a monstrous 89%, which is higher than any other DCEU movie to have ever been released in cinemas (it still falls just shy of the Snyder Cut, but more on that later). However, it's impossible to say whether Black Adam would have enjoyed such a high score had it not been for that post-credit scene.
