As touched upon in the intro of this article, there are plenty of comic book movies that won’t satisfy the critics who maybe expect a little more from their cinema experience, but will be more than enough to entertain audiences. Captain Marvel however, is a different story.

This is the first of just two movies on this list where the divide between critics and audiences goes the other way. The former group across the board was impressed enough to collectively give a Certified Fresh score of 79%, while with audiences it landed at a rough 45%.

In fairness, aggregate sites like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb can’t always be trusted, with both falling prey to certain movies and shows being review bombed before they are ever even released. Captain Marvel did suffer from this, along with the likes of Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk, but that being said, there were still genuine criticisms about the movie that were too big to ignore.

The titular character wasn’t the most likeable in the MCU franchise, her powers felt at times unearned, and seemingly the biggest criticism across the board was that Captain Marvel was ‘just another Marvel movie’. Many have accused Marvel Studios of finding a safe formula that works, and Brie Larson’s debut did little to buck that supposed trend.
