While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen that the ‘Marvel movie’ has essentially become its own genre in the industry, there are plenty of movies to come from Marvel Comics outside the walls of the biggest franchise in Hollywood.

Some have run alongside it, while others came long before Tony Stark told the world he was Iron Man. One such movie was Blade. Back in 1998, comic book movies were few and far between. There was no X-Men to be seen yet, nor anything from Spider-Man, while it had been years since a good Batman movie, and even longer since a Superman film of any description.

Blade then came in, and if not for the commercial success of the movie, there may never have been an MCU born ten years later at all. Audiences appreciated the movie, with a 78% score, though critics weren’t as convinced, with a rotten score of just 57%.

Critics be damned though, Blade is coming back in 2024, and though there have been reported struggles with production already, this certainly wouldn’t have happened if not for the wild popularity of the original movie all those years ago.
