10 Comic Book Movies Everyone Tried To Copy
5. Deadpool
By the time Deadpool was set for the release, moviegoers were already aware that comic book movies could be a bit more risque. Whether it was a more gritty atmosphere or an emphasis on violence, plenty of superhero movies had toyed with the idea of a more adult tone. While Deadpool may have been adult in rating, it was the first of its kind to take the comedic element to the absolute extreme.
Though the entire movie is still a superhero movie, the combat fights and one-liners are always second to the incredible comedic timing of Ryan Reynolds, who pretty much narrates the entire movie in character as the Merc with a Mouth. Up until then, you could rely on a few off color comments from superheroes, but where else would you hear about jabs at Limp Bizkit, the sexual prowess of Wolverine, and the superior acting method of Ryan Reynolds from the same character?
The character of Deadpool may be strictly tied to Reynolds, but many directors have tried to put their own spin on the wise-cracking superhero protagonist, with the most recent attempt being Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey.
Aside from the comedic aspect, Deadpool showed that an R-rated superhero movie could be extremely profitable, which led to movies like Logan and the Snyder cut of Batman vs. Superman playing up their R-rating. There are plenty of normal superheroes, but Deadpool was the one that made a morally questionable hero seem like a lot of fun.
