10 Comic Book Movies That Could Be The Next Avengers: Infinity War

With the Disney-Fox merger nearing completion, Marvel Studios are tantalisingly close to realising the full potential of their cosmic comic books. Annihilation, a galaxy-shattering event from 2006 that redefined the Marvel Universe's cosmic corners, is the one most deserving of comparisons to Infinity War. It was truly lethal, and while there once was a time where the story would've been considered too niche, the floodgates have been well and truly opened now that Guardians, Infinity War, Ragnarok, and the soon-to-be-released Captain Marvel are around.

But whereas Infinity War united the Avengers with the Guardians, Annihilation is an event intrinsically linked to Marvel's cosmic comics. It's no less impressive however, and while there's little doubt Marvel could get away with telling an Annihilation-style story in the MCU's current state, it'd be better to wait on the arrival of Galactus and Silver Surfer (trust us).

Once they're along for the ride however, it's not difficult to envision Annihilation bookending one of the future phases of the MCU. Its story, centred around the eponymous Annihilus as he leads the Annihilation Wave (his invading force) across the galaxy, can truly be referred to as epic. Among the book's most famous actors include Nova - a character sure to arrive in the MCU sooner or later - Drax (in his first appearance in redesign made famous by Dave Bautista), Silver Surfer and Galactus. The Guardians also feature, but Annihilation's premise is best made clear by the fact that its chief antagonist manages to dominate Galactus, a being once considered to be the Marvel Universe's most powerful, in but a few short issues.

It's a ways away from becoming reality, but in continuing Marvel's cosmic stories, it's likely that Annihilation is on the House of Mouse's reading list.
