10 Comic Book Movies That Don't Deserve To Be Rotten On Rotten Tomatoes

5. Blade II (2002)

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 57% Blade II, released back in 2002, is a step up from the original picture in almost every way, and yet it's sitting with a measly score of 57% on Rotten Tomatoes. Surely this is one of the most underrated comic book movies of the past fifteen years? The story picks up a few years after the events of the first film, as Wesley Snipe's near-silent vampire protagonist re-teams with his old mentor (played by Kris Kristofferson) to battle a deadly virus that makes vampires even more dangerous than before. One could argue that the critics dismissed Blade II because they felt like it was expected of them; only a few noticed that this sequel was a brilliant adaptation of the comic on which it was based, with Guillermo del Toro - that's right: Guillermo del Toro directed this movie - bringing his own idiosyncrasies to the material and enhancing the hell out of it. As such, Blade II avoids the pitfalls of the "arbitrary sequel" and becomes something more. The best thing about Blade II is its pacing, as Del Toro propels his vampire anti-hero through a series of brilliant set-pieces and fight scenes (courtesy of master choreographer Donnie Yen). If there's little plot to speak of, this isn't the sort of film where it matters: Del Toro constructs his movie like a rollercoaster, and audiences should treat it like a wild ride.
