10 Comic Book Movies That Got MULTIPLE Characters Wrong
1. X-Men
Let's first acknowledge that comic book movies would not be anywhere near the quality that they are today with out 2000's X-Men. That being said, the filmmakers took far too many liberties when adapting the superhero team. It's too easy to point out the missed opportunities of X-Men Origins: Wolverine and X-Men: The Last Stand. We know Deadpool and Juggernaut were mishandled, but what led them to this point?
We're introduced to this world through Anna Paquin's Rogue, who is no longer the tough talking, flying, mighty, former villain with a strong southern accent. They rightfully give focus to her insecurities when it comes to love and physical touch, however Paquin is completely miscast. She's too young, looks nothing like Rogue from the comics, has no backstory with Mystique, and she's supposed to be with Gambit - NOT Iceman!
Speaking of Iceman, he's supposed to be one of the OG's, why is he a young student? The villains are mostly fine but Ray Park is too cool and underutilized as Toad. And while Tyler Mane looks the part as Sabertooth, a far better portrayal would come later from Liev Schrieber.
Famke Jansen and James Marsden are fine as Jean Grey and Cyclops (in this movie). Halle Berry gives none of the leadership and strong-willed qualities that Storm possesses. Hugh Jackman may not have been the first choice to play Wolverine, but the worst thing you can say is that he's too tall. At least Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are perfect.
The powers-that-be wrote themselves into a corner with the very first movie in the franchise by not giving age appropriate starting lines to their characters. Hence the various ways the X-Men films have failed, been rebooted, and timelines altered. Phoenix never stood a chance.
