10 Comics You Must Read Before Avengers: Infinity War

Sal Buscema loves a good classic, so it's no surprise to see his name on The Kree/Skrull War, an Avengers storyline second only to Starlin and Perez's Infinity Gauntlet.

With Captain Marvel introducing the Skrulls in 2019, and with the Kree already an established presence in the MCU, the chances of a full-scale conflict breaking out certainly aren't unrealistic. If Secret Invasion - an Invasion of the Body Snatchers-style event where the Skrulls impersonated key figures in the Marvel Universe) - fails to manifest later down the line, then it stands to reason that Marvel have different designs on the license, in which case, The Kree/Skrull War asserts itself as a real contender for the next Avengers film.

The storyline, written by Roy Thomas and drawn by both Buscema brothers and Neal Adams, centred around (as you probably would've guessed), a war between the Skrulls and the Kree. The original Captain Marvel (Mar-Vel) was even involved, and the book was one of a kind in how it conveyed the sheer scale of the Marvel Universe. It also introduced the now iconic Scarlet Witch-Vision romance, which looks to be hotting up considerably in the next Avengers film, so it's seminal in a whole host of respects.

We may not know how many Avengers make it through to the end of Infinity War, but even if this other war doesn't make it to the big-screen eventually, it's definitely worth a read for its cosmic quality, of which it has in abundance.

Content Producer/Presenter

WhatCulture's very own resident movie guy, Ewan has been working in the content creation biz for over 10 years now, having started as a freelance contributor to WhatCulture Gaming all the way back in 2015. After graduating with a First-Class Honours in History from Northumbria University in 2017 (where he won a prize for a totally killer dissertation on the Watergate years), Ewan took on the role of Comics Editor at WhatCulture and quickly developed WhatCulture Comics into one of the biggest superhero-focused channels on YouTube. He followed this with a brief hiatus at Screen Rant in 2021, where he worked across the Gaming and Film sections as a writer and editor, before returning to WhatCulture as a Senior Content Producer / Presenter in 2023. He started his own podcast, We Love Dad Movies, in 2022, and has contributed several written pieces to the Eisner-nominated comics website Shelfdust as well. In his current role, Ewan incorporates his love of cinema, comic books, and history into written pieces and video essays for WhatCulture's Film & TV channel, as well as WhatCulture Gaming and WhatCulture Horror, with a particular focus on nineties-era Dad Movies, old school Westerns, and Golden Age Hollywood Noir. John Carpenter is his fave, and he thinks Batman Beyond should never have been cancelled. If that's your vibe, you'll probably like his stuff.
