7. Empires Of The Deep

Batgirl Cancelled
Jonathan Lawrence & Jon Jiang

Real estate billionaire, Jon Jiang, was so blown away by James Cameron's Avatar, it inspired him to make his own sci-fi blockbuster. This film became Empires of the Deep - an epic saga centred around a war between mermaid kingdoms. Jiang was certain his vanity project would be as successful as Star Wars, and hoped it would lead to a trilogy, a spin-off cartoon, video games, and a theme park. He also convinced Hollywood star and Bond girl, Olga Kurylenko, to play the lead mermaid.

But due to Jiang's non-existent knowledge of filmmaking, he had no idea what to do. Production was so tumultuous, Empires of the Deep went through 40 drafts, ten screenwriters, and four directors. On top of that, numerous leads quit and many crewmembers were left unpaid. Despite pumping $130 million into the budget, the special effects, sets, and costumes were laughably awful. The production took over six years, meaning some actors looked drastically different when they had to film for reshoots.

Although Empires of the Deep was meant to come out in 2011, it didn't even have a rough cut until 2014. But after the production went overbudget, Jiang decided it was time to cut his losses and move on.

But it's not all bad. At least we got a fantastically terrible trailer out of the whole ordeal.
