10 Completely Original Movies To Look Out For In 2018

7. Alpha

A Quiet Place Emily Blunt
Sony Pictures

Release Date: March 9

Young adult movies carry one heck of a stigma nowadays, so it comes as a relief that Alpha - though it revolves around a young man trying to find his place in the world - doesn't look like it's falling into any of the trappings that made the sub-genre so widely hated.

Namely, those trappings are cheesy, predictable love stories and the same old oppressive, dystopian future we've seen a million times before (Divergent, Hunger Games, Maze Runner, The Host, yawn), and to combat these tropes, Alpha is taking a trip 20,000 years into the past and focuses on the relationship between a boy and a wolf. Yup.

The basic gist is this: a young caveman (Kodi Smit-McPhee) is separated from his tribe after an accident, and must battle the elements (and a whole host of wildlife that wants to kill him) to make his way home. Along the way, he begins to develop a curious friendship with a wolf.

Anyone who's seen The Road knows how talented Kodi Smit-McPhee is, and with director Albert Hughes at the helm - who made the superb Book Of Eli - Alpha looks to be in safe hands.
