10 Completely Original Movies To Look Out For In 2019

1. Us

Jordan Peele Us
Universal

Release Date: 15 March 2019

The success of writer-director Jordan Peele's Get Out was one of 2017's most surprising stories: an Oscar win and over $250 million worldwide were two results nobody expected of a small thriller movie from one half of Key and Peele.

His follow-up project instantly became one of the most anticipated releases on the movie calendar, and earlier this year, we finally learned some concrete details about it.

Us will release in the first half of 2019, and has been described as a "social-horror thriller" and a "thought-provoking popcorn movie", a film that - like Get Out before it - will deconstruct stereotypes and poke fun at odd social practices, all in a digestible, witty and hugely entertaining fashion. The nitty-gritty details of the plot are being kept under wraps for the time being, but with Peele's track record (and a cast including Lupita Nyong'o and Winston Duke) there's already enough reason to be excited.

It seems odd to position a potential Oscar contender right after awards season ends, but regardless, Us will surely leave a strong impression that flows well into 2019, and beyond.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for over ten years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. In 2022, he took charge of WhoCulture and has grown it into the biggest Doctor Who channel on YouTube, and one of the biggest Doctor Who communities on the web full-stop. He has been writing and video editing since his early teens, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers, off the back of a burning obsession with the Matt Smith era of the show. Like many his age, he first got into Doctor Who with the 2005 revival, but has since gone back and fallen in love with the classic years too. If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order, or to give you a random factoid about the making of Gridlock, Danny is the person to ask!
