10 Controversial Movie Scenes That Were Cut Before Release
9. The Melting Body - Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom
Steven Spielberg has gotten away with any number of disturbing scenes in movies aimed at kids; there’s the face-melting Nazis in Raiders, the T-Rex attack in Jurassic Park and the face ripping scene from Poltergeist. The man is responsible for a lot of therapy bills, basically.
Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom is arguably one of his most disturbing, coming complete with human sacrifice, child torture and man-eating crocodiles. Spielberg has seen sort of disowned the film due to the level of darkness, though he did have the sense to tone it down slightly. During the scene where the sacrificial victim has his heart ripped out and he’s lowered into the lava, it originally went even further.
We were meant to see him actually lowered into the burning lava while screaming, and his body would disintegrate and leave his face floating on the surface. Spielberg realised such a horrific moment would send audiences over the edge, so out it came.
