10 Coolest Sci-Fi Movie & TV Worlds

1. Arrakis - Dune

Ego Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol 2
Universal

Like with Avatar, the movie itself doesn't have to actually be any good for the world it portrays to be interesting. Arrakis is far more interesting in the book than in the movie, but the only rule for getting on this list was to be adapted at least once, so it counts.

Arrakis is one of the most famous worlds in all of science fiction, and for good reason. Everything about it, even in the watered down David Lynch movie, has such meticulous detail added to it, that you genuinely believe that this world is out there somewhere, and that this is how we as a species will respond to it once we get there.

The key to any good fictional world is the question "what do they eat?" The key to any GREAT fictional world is using that question to ask "okay, so HOW do they eat it? Do they eat the same thing, or vary it up? What's good to eat in this world and why? What class of citizen eats what food?" and so on and so forth. Arrakis answers all of these questions in thorough detail in just the first book.

Arrakis is the most thoroughly explored science fiction world ever adapted for the screen. But hopefully this upcoming new adaptation will actually be good on its own merits.
