Dawn of the Dead remake - chainsaw
Universal Pictures

Nobody expected much when it was announced that the best zombie movie of all time was going to be remade. The original Night of the Living Dead was remade in 1990 and whilst actually very good, wasn’t a patch on the original. Consider this writer one of the people who was a wee bit dubious of a Dawn of the Dead remake, that was until I watched the opening sequence. If you haven’t yet experienced this, please go and check it out.

Zack Snyder did a fine job here and minus the whole zombie baby subplot, this is a fantastic modern zombie movie. Speeding up the zombies, although not to everyone's liking, was a great way to ramp up the tension and thrills. Already on a pair of modified, zombie-proof school buses, the remaining survivors slowly leave the shopping mall, hoping to find safety elsewhere. One ingenious modification on the buses allows our survivors to slide a chainsaw blade up and down the side of the bus, removing the limbs of any grabby flesh eaters.

The buses get free of a HUGE zombie horde and can finally speed up. This is where having a chainsaw in an enclosed space may not have been the best idea. You know what they say, if you can’t swing a cat then you can’t swing a chainsaw! One of our chainsaw wielding survivors loses his balance as the bus swerves and takes a tumble into poor Monica. It doesn’t end well for Monica.
